“Espalier” is a French term referring to the method of training a tree or plant to grow flat against a wall or trellis.  The beautiful stitch pattern used for these two bags is reminiscent of the “Belgian Fence” pattern used in espalier and is highlighted by a pretty spray of long stitches that give a floral or leaf effect.  They are wonderful Spring/Summer bags, or try making it in wool for a pretty winter bag.  So easy you'll want to make several in different colors!

Skill level:  intermediate, plus some sewing skills

Stitches used:  knit, purl, yarn-overs, provisional cast on, bind off.

Materials needed for Hipster Bag:
Size US 6 (4mm) 16” circular knitting needles
Size US 6 (4mm) double point knitting needles
200 yards of DK weight yarn
Metal strap adjuster and d-ring

Materials needed for Tote:
Size US 8 (5mm) 16” and 24” circular knitting needles
310 yards of worsted weight yarn
2 leather handles with d-rings on both ends or 4 metal d-rings if making fabric straps

Materials needed for Both Bags:
stitch markers 
size F or G crochet hook 
1 yard fabric
1 yard fusible interfacing

Finished measurements blocked:
Hipster: 9” long, 8” wide, 2” deep
Tote:  11” long, 12” wide, 3” deep

Gauge:

Using suggested yarn and needles and stockinette stitch knitted through the back loops. 

Hipster Bag: 6 sts per inch and 8 rows per inch.

Tote:  5 sts per inch and 6 ½ rows per inch.

Adjust your needle size as necessary to get the specified gauge.
